Collections, 1970-2003, of T. Gibson Hobbs and I. Hill Christian, III, members of of the Virginia Canals and Navigations Society, donated to the Society, including correspondence, research notes and reports on canals, canal engineers and canal engineering, especially the James River & Kanawha Canal in Virginia, newsletters, publications, project files, photographs, clippings and maps. Information is included on the James River Cement Works and the Locher family, manufacturers of cement used in building the James River & Kanawha Canal. Although the primary focus of the collection is the canals and waterways of Virginia, canal projects and source materials from other states are also included. The collection also includes maps of the right-of-way of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company, along the James River and Kanawha Canal in Virginia.

On 31 August 1868 the Covington and Ohio Railroad Company and the Virginia Central Railroad Company merged to form the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company. In 1870 the Blue Ridge Railroad was added to the company. After defaulting, the company was reorganized in 1878 as the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company. The road ran from Ft.
